NAIFA-Massachusetts Holds Day on the Hill

Honors Representative Edward Coppinger as Legislator of the Year

BOSTON, MA – April 9, 2014 – Today the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) held its Day on the Hill at the Massachusetts State House. This event provides the association with the opportunity to share its 2014 legislative agenda with legislators as well as to honor the organization’s Legislator of the Year.

As part of the Day on the Hill, NAIFA was pleased to honor Representative Edward Coppinger (D-Boston) with the Legislator of the Year Award. Representative Coppinger was elected as State Representative for the 10th Suffolk District in November, 2010. At the outset, Representative Coppinger showed a commitment to NAIFA by participating in the association’s 2011 New Legislator reception and signing on as a cosponsor to NAIFA’s priority bill, An Act Relative to the Continuing Education of Insurance Producers (now HB 870). Representative Coppinger, following the leadership of House Majority leader Representative Ronald Mariano, is now serving as the lead legislator sponsor of HB 870, which has already reached third reading status in the House. Representative Coppinger has served as an active member of the legislature’s Joint Committee on Financial Services since December 2011, and has routinely appeared before the Committee to provide testimony on legislation of importance to NAIFA members.

“NAIFA is thankful for the leadership of Representative Coppinger in helping to advance HB 870,”said NAIFA-MA Government Relations Chair, Adam Sachs. “Not only will this legislation grant NAIFA members three continuing insurance education credits by virtue of being an active member, it will also provide citizens with access to more ethical and better qualified agents.”

Almost 50 NAIFA members visited their legislators to advocate in support of HB 870, the continuing education bill, and HB 922, the bill that would strengthen the Massachusetts Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association law; and in opposition to bills that would prohibit insurers from considering the actuarial significance of a person’s gender in pricing life and disability insurance products: HB 838, SB 427, HB 837, HB 920 and SB 426.

NAIFA Massachusetts is an organization that has nearly 800 members statewide who are licensed insurance agents and financial advisors who focus their practices on one or more of the following: long term care insurance, disability insurance, life insurance and annuities, health insurance and employee benefits, multiline, and financial advising and investments. Its mission is to advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment, enhance business and professional skills, and promote the ethical conduct of its members.
